Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 6 Jan 1968 issue. The battle at Tam Quan, seven miles northeast of An Khe, accounted for seven enemy killed and raised the total number of enemy killed to 618 during two weeks of action. ARVN infantry units have been credited with killing 2?5 enemy. Elements of the 2/8th Cav were conducting a search and destroy operation near the village one day when they began receiving heavy fire from four enemy locations. As the enemy fire grew in intensity, the infantrymen called in artillery and airstrikes on the enemy positions. The heavy support continued all day and at dusk the enemy broke contact. Since Operation Pershing began last February, over 4900 enemy have been killed.
