Description: The following is an edited version of the Awards And Decorations section from the 20 Jan 1968 issue.
A helicopter pilot who risked his own life to rescue the survivors of an air crash was recently presented the Distinguished Flying Cross. WO Danny J. Rudy, a member of the 2d Signal Group, was near the city of Vung Tau when he received a request to search for the downed aircraft. The chopper spent an hour in the high winds over the ocean and, although he did not spot the survivors, Rudy did locate the wreckage. He was then informed the four-man crew had been picked up by a Navy boat and they had to be evacuated to a hospital. The helicopter was not equipped with a hoisting apparatus for evacuation, so Rudy hovered his craft next to the boat while the high winds threatened to blow the helicopter into the navy vessel. Although the helicopter was running short of fuel, Rudy maneuvered close enough to allow the patients to move into the craft. The crewmen were all transferred to the chopper and moved to the hospital in Vung Tau.
