Tet of '68 information
for Tet-68
For date 680201
South Vietnam
Description: The damage to civilian property in several towns was enormous. It was estimated that 50% of Pleiku, 45% of Ben Tre, 25% of Vinh Long and Ban Me Thuot, and 20% of Da Lat were destroyed during the fighting. Far more crucial in the long run, was the impact on the Vietnamese civilian population. Tet generated more than half a million new refugees plus 14,000 killed and 20-22,000 wounded. While many blamed the Communists and accepted the necessity of the allied bombings and shellings, others did not. They were angry that the ARVN couldn't protect them and that their homes were destoryed. Looting by ARVN soliders after some battles only compounded the problem.
