Description: At part of Tet of '68, 1st Inf Div elements fought many battles in Ben Cat, Chau Thanh, Di An, Lai Thieu and Thu Duc, killing more than 1,500 enemy in 20 days. Most of this fighting was also associated with Operation LAM SON 68. The largest single battle was around the village of An My, less than a mile from the north gate of the Phu Loi basecamp. C/1/28th Inf and B/1/4th Cav left Phu Loi on a recon-in-force mission of An My and the VC hit this force with claymores, RPG and SA. A & D/1/28th were airlifted into the battle which raged until 1800H when the 1st Inf Div ordered them to break contact and return to Phu Loi. The following day these units with D/1/4th Cav and elements from the 2/16th Inf returned and the VC were still there. The battle continued until 1900H when a sweep revealed 372 VC killed from the 273rd VC Rgmt. U.S. losses were 5 KIA and 32 WIA.

The following from Ronald Saxton, LTC retired: A/2-16 Inf under then CPT (Now COL, Retired) Dan Frazier and Recon/2-16 under then 1LT (Now COL, Retired) Sam Matthews were in this fight. Alpha was in a blocking position and the Cmd Group was overrun with, as I recall, all members KIA except Dan Frazier who was wounded. Dan was awarded Silver Star. 1/4 Cav ARP was inserted and rescued Frazier. one of the bravest men I know. Recon under Mathews was inserted along a gully/stream bed and killed as I recall 11 VC/NVA. The Military History Channels edition of "Shootout!-Tet Offensive", aired 12/8/2006. I was the Acting 2-16 S-3 during Tet, took command of Delta/2-16 outside Saigon 4 days later, went on RR to Hawaii April 68 with Frazier and he, Mathews (who was my D/2-16 XO for a month and took command of Alpha/2-16 May 68) and I were all in Advanced Courses at Benning upon return from VN.
