Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Helicopter pilot receives DSC" that appeared in the 5 Oct 1968 issue. 1st Avn Bde pilot MAJ James A Scott III was awarded the nation's second highest medal for his actions during the Battle of Dalat in February, 1968. While friendly troops were in contact with enemy forces in the besieged city of Dalat, Scott, then a captain, made repeated low-level passes over the battle area to pinpoint the enemy positions. Even though his aircraft became riddled with bullets from the enemy fire, he succeeded in locating targets for his team and led it on an attack on the enemy emplacements. He then flew to a nearby airfield which was under mortar attack to rearm and refuel his helicopter. As he once more orbited the city looking for trouble spots, his aircraft received enemy anti-aircraft fire and he was wounded. Scott found the source of fire and led a team from the 92nd AHC in an attack. As his helicopter broke away from the target, it was struck again by the enemy fire and the tail rotor control cables were severed. When he was unable to maintain positive control over his helicopter, he nursed it to the airfield and executed a successful emergency landing. Previously Scott had been awarded the ACM, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star and three Oak Leaf Clusters, two PHs, two DFCs and 14 AMs, one for valor. Photo Caption - MAJ James A.
