Description: B/7/17 Cav was once again flying in support of elements of the 173d ABN at Kontum city. At 0925, 15 NVA were observed moving north toward the city and taken underfire by the gunships resulting in 4 NVA KIA's. An insertion followed to develop the situation and was completed at 1100. As the Blues began moving south toward the area where the NVA were killed, they made contact with an estimated NVA company. This contact resulted in the capture of 18 122mm rockets, 4,000 rounds of AK-47 ammo, 300 pounds of salt, 1 AK-47, 5 SKS's, 1 7.62 ChiCom pistol, and 10 NVA KIA's. Friendly losses were minor; 3 US WIA's, two of them required evacuation to the 71st Evac at Pleiku. At this time, B Troop received a change of mission to reinforce A Troop that had also located an estimated NVA company size unit. The combined Blues from A and B Troops, reinforced with D Troop was inserted. The Scouts observed 5 NVA which were promptly taken under fire resulting in 1 NVA KIA. The ground forces made contact with the NVA entrenched in well fortified positions. The contact was maintained until 1730 and left the NVA 16 less in number, 6 were credited to B Troop. A and B Troop sustained 1 US KIA each. The combined force was extracted at 1745 and returned to base camp. The aerial component remained in the area to direct airstrikes on the enemy positions but no DBA was conducted. EDITOR's NOTE: the name of the B Troop KIA has not been determined.
