Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Gunships Cut Tax."
Saigon (AP) - Villagers in the Mekong Delta complained about tax collectors so the U.S. Navy sent helicopter gunships to deal with the problem. The Navy said Saturday that Viet Cong guerrillas had been taxing boats passing on the Bassac River 73 miles southwest of Saigon. Four river patrol boats with Vietnamese militia men forced the Viet Cong tax collectors into and open field, the Navy said, and the helicopter ships attacked them with rockets and machine guns. Vietnamese troops found seven enemy bodies there later, a spokesman reported.
