Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 30 Mar 1968 issue. Troopers of the 11th ACR, in conjunction with South Vietnamese infantrymen, killed 56 NVA soldiers in heavy fighting about 15 miles west of Saigon. The Blackhorse Regiment's 3rd Sqdn was supporting elements of the 49th Inf Reg, 25th ARVN Div on a sweep during Operation Quyet Thang. At about 3 p.m. the ARVN soldiers came under small arms, automatic weapons and rocket grenade fire from an estimated company-size NVA unit. The Vietnamese advanced firing small arms while the cavalrymen in tanks and ACAVs fired high explosive rounds along with .50 cal. and M60 machineguns. Contact was broken at 6:45 p.m. that evening, but airstrikes, light fire teams and artillery were concentrated on the enemy positions into the night.
