Description: These two days of S2/S3 1/46 Inf journals were obtained with the assistance of 1/52 Inf Bde veterans. Hats off to the 1/52nd Inf veterans! Les Hines ADVA Historian 2002. Abbreviations: ACAV- Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle ARVN- Army Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnamese Soldier) Baldy - LZ in northern Americal Area of Operations. At the time this was the headquarters for the 196th Light Infantry Bde. Blue Ghost - F/8 Cav 123rd Avn Bn helicopter unit. BDE - Brigade CA - Combat Assault ChiCom- Usually referring to Chinese Communist manufactured war materials. CLDC - Chu Lai Defense Command. DO - Dust Off - Helicopter medical evacuation. Firebird - 71st AHC gunship call sign. HE - High Explosive H&I - Harrassment and Interdiction artillery fires. Helix - Air Force Forward Observer LAAM site- HAWK anti-aircraft missile battery located north of Chu Lai. Logger [sic] (laager) Temporary defensive position. LZ - Landing Zone M-60 - 7.62mm allied machine gun M-79 - 40mm allied grenade launcher Muskets - Call sign for 176th Assault Helicopter Company gunships. (Napom [sic] (napalm) jellied gas bomb that burns the enemy Neg sit rep - Negative situation report. NDP - Night Defensive Position. S,F JEH Will leave at 0800. 12 0815 Bulldog 33: Make sure someone checks out area B&D informed JEH where mortar fire was received last evening. 13 0830 Dustoff - Indulge 113. 1 Vn sick for 11 days, Notif Bde DRW unable to hear. Called 0804, complete 0820 (BT325181). 14 0840 Doughboy 29 on Hill 68: Found some tail fins D DRW from 60mm mortar in the area. 15 0845 Unit locations: D6 287088. Also have 32 Vn Inf S3 Air DRW to be extracted, also bring out explosives. 16 0850 Gave Bde report on incidents last night. DRW GARY A. Inf S3 Air DRW 26 1428 Patrol from Hill 68 found mortar site and S3 Inf DRW tunnel at BT302128, also found sniper position at 366136. 27 1438 B (-) requests gunships. Have 20 VC trapped Contacted Bde DRW at BT253085. Also found carbine on ground. 28 1450 B Co found one more Chicom carbine. Notif Bde DRW 29 1503 Gunships on station at 1503 hrs, made contact D DRW with B6 at 1508 on internal push. 30 1510 CLDC reaction force - plts Alfa, 61 pax, Notif Bde DRW PZ 396145. A6 cmdr Alfa push. 31 1525 Bde given report on operations tomorrow. D DRW 32 1530 Musket breaking station, ammo expended D DRW 33 1538 D6 will be in B Co location shortly. J JEH SUMMARY: At 1428, a patrol from Hill 68 found a mortar site and tunnel at BT302128. A sniper position was found at BT366136. At 1438 hr,s B(-) trapped 20 VC at BT253085. Gunships were called in. Neg results. Two Chicom carbines were found in the vicinity. At 2340, B Co received mortar fire and small arms fire, resulting in 11 patients. Had 17 casualties: 7 litter, 10 ambulatory, B6 and B2 included. At 0910 D6 reported fox holes were 3-4 feet deep. Mortars were walked in on Bravo side, of perimeter. Also lots of trees causing mortars to burst above ground. At 1820 hrs D6 received 3-4 rounds of carbine sniper fire to the west. Negative results. All other activities were of a routine nature with negative significant results.
