Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Reds Down 6 More Aircraft."
Saigon (UPI) - The United States announced the losses Saturday of four more warplanes and two helicopters shot down by the Communists, all but one in South Vietnam. An Air Force F4 Phantom knocked down over North Vietnam's panhandle Friday was the 836th American plane lost to ground fire over the North, spokesmen said. The two crewmen are missing in action. Three other planes - an F100 Supersabre, and A4 Skyhawk and an O1E Bird Dog Spotter - were shot down over the South. The Bird Dog pilot was killed, but the other two pilots ejected and were rescued unharmed spokesmen said. Two crewmen were killed in the crash of an Army OH6 observation helicopter 36 miles north-northwest of Saigon, while an Army "Huey" helicopter's four man crew was injured when shot down near the Cambodian border, spokesmen said. American pilots, blessed with good weather, flew 128 bombing missions into North Vietnam's southern panhandle Friday but stayed six miles below the 19th parallel, President Johnson's unofficial curtailment line. Pilots reported 29 trucks and 12 bridges destroyed or damaged. At least 20 secondary explosions were reported indicating hits on fuel or ammunition, the communique said.
