Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2 No. 38 dated May 27. CHU LAI (AMERICAL-IO) - Action tapered off yesterday as Americal Division units killed 17 VC and captured one individual weapon in their area of southern I Corps. Scattered incidents included a rocket assault on the Division's Chu Lai complex in which light casualties were reported. Units of the 196th Infantry Brigade found 52 dead NVA and 22 weapons which were accredited to Saturday's action. Units of the 196th Infantry Brigade killed three VC, captured one weapon and conducted a search of the battle area south of the Chang River and found 52 NVA killed and 22 weapons during the action yesterday. Elements of "F" Troop, 8th Cavalry killed 12 VC during light action yesterday in Operation Wheeler/Wallowa about six miles north of Thang Binh. In Operation Burlington Trail, troopers from "F" Troop and the 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry apprehended nine suspects. Units of the 198th Infantry Brigade reported light enemy contacts yesterday as one VC was killed throughout their portion of Quang Tin Province. Infantrymen of the 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry found and destroyed the rocket firing sites from which the VC plummeted small amount of rockets into the Division's Chu Lai complex. Americal's 11th Infantry Brigade also reported light enemy activity yesterday as the "Jungle Warriors" killed one VC, apprehended one suspect and uncovered one bangalore torpedo and a booby-trapped 105 round in the Duc Pho area. A unit of the 196th Infantry Brigade's 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry engaged and killed three VC with small arms fire yesterday and captured an M-1 carbine and equipment eight miles southwest of Hoi An. Soldiers of the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry commanded by CPT John R. Wolfe (Marcellus, MI) in the search 15 miles west of Tam Ky found nine SKS rifles, four light machineguns, one RPD machinegun, one semi-automatic weapon, one 82mm mortar tube, numerous rounds of small arms ammunition, some hand grenades, mortar rounds and other munitions. Other 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry units found three AK-47s, one K-44, two SKSs, munitions and equipment. Also found were the bodies of 52 NVA soldiers killed in action Saturday. Also searching the same area, a company of the 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry led by CPT Charles Ebert (Washington, D.C.) found three AK-47s, one RPD light machinegun, one K-53 and assorted munitions and equipment. A 198th Infantry Brigade unit of the 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry killed one VC 12 miles south of Chu Lai. Civic action soldiers of the 198th Infantry's "Brave and Bold" Brigade treated 131 Vietnamese during medical visits yesterday. An 11th Brigade unit of the 4th Battalion, 21st Infantry engaged and killed a VC 11 miles northeast of Quang Ngai. The Volunteer Informant Program continued in Operation Muscatine and south of Duc Pho by 11th Brigade soldiers yielded 28 anti-personnel mines, 1,165 rounds of small arms ammunition and numerous explosive devices which were turned in By Vietnamese civilians. Division forces suffered two soldiers killed and nine wounded and evacuated for treatment.
