Operation TOAN THANG II
South Vietnam
Description: TOAN THANG or COMPLETE VICTORY entailed static defense of designated tactical areas of responsibility as well as limited reconnaissance expeditions to discourage NVA campsites and rocket positions within striking distance of Saigon. The 1st Inf Div and an ARVN force teamed for the last half of 1968 and would claim 2,549 VC killed plus large quantities of weapons, ammo, and food captured. The 1st Cav Div and an ARVN force teamed in late 1968 and early 1969. They claimed nearly 270 known enemy casualties and uncovered one of the biggest caches of munitions found during the War. The spoils included more than 100,000 AK-47, 643 mortar, and 35,000 rounds for heavy machine guns plus a ton of explosives.
