Operation JEB STUART III
Quang Tri Province, I Corps, South Vietnam

Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 8 June 1968 issue. Skytroopers of the 1st Cav Div killed 53 enemy soldiers during the first four days of Jeb Stuart III. Early on the first morning, cavalrymen from the 1/8th Cav set up an ambush site four miles SE of Quang Tri. A reinforced enemy squad spotted the site and engaged the skytroopers with automatic weapons. The U.S. force returned the fire and called for artillery support. After the enemy withdrew, a sweep of the area revealed 12 NVA bodies. One suspect was detained who stated that he had been in South Vietnam for 31 days. He said he entered through Laos from North Vietnam. He added that the morale of the men in his unit was low. Elements of the 2/7th Cav searching an area six miles NE of Camp Evans, encountered sporadic mortar and sniper fire. Artillery and airstrikes supported the troopers and a sweep of the area at the end of the day revealed 12 enemy bodies. Gunship crews from the 1/9th Cav reported killing two NVA soldiers in brief skirmishes yesterday as they patrolled mountainous areas NW of Camp Evans. Other Cav units recorded seven kills in widely scattered firefights.
