Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "9th Inf Kills 26 Enemy Ammunition, Weapons Also Seized" dated 8 June 1968. Twenty-six VC were killed and enemy ammunition, weapons and supplies captured during seven hours of hard fighting 10 miles SE of Saigon recently. After being airlifted into the area, the 3/39th Inf conducted a sweep. At about 11 a.m., the company came within 100 yards of a palm grove and was hit by intense small arms and automatic weapons fire. Gunships and airstrikes were called in, driving an estimated VC company into the open. The 1st Platoon killed eight in the initial exchange and then chased the enemy through heavy foliage and rice paddies. Again they encountered heavy resistance and called in air support for the second time. To escape the fusillade, the enemy tried to slip past U.S. positions. The 2nd and 3rd Platoons killed three and then pinned the enemy down. For the next four hours, company elements tried to maneuver into position to charge the bunker complex where the enemy had taken refuge. At 4 p.m., Company A was inserted east of the complex, enabling Company B to flank the enemy position. With the VC caught in a trap, the 9th Div soldiers ripped through the stronghold and attacked the enemy in their bunkers. A final sweep of the area found 26 bodies, four of which had been killed by gunships. Captured were two machineguns, six rifles, three rocket launchers, eight rockets, assorted ammunition, web gear and numerous documents.
