Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 27 July 1968 issue. The 9th Inf Div killed 123 enemy during the week. In one day, the troops killed 84 enemy in three separate contacts. The first contact was made when helicopters from the 3/5th Cav observed several enemy soldiers running toward a woodline. A short time later, troops of the 2d Bde were inserted into the area. Combined efforts resulted in 14 enemy killed. In the second contact, helicopters from the 7/1st Cav killed 14 VC, and artillery missions fired by the 3/34th Arty were responsible for 21 enemy kills while ground troops added four more. The third encounter resulted in 31 enemy dead when soldiers from the 2/39th Inf were returning from a night patrol 16 miles SW of Saigon. The enemy were caught in a triangle with a river in their backs when additional troops were called in.
