Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 10 Aug 1968 issue. In a week of scattered contacts the Americal Div took a heavy toll on the enemy, killing 197. Troopers of the 1/1st Cav, supported by gunship crews from F/8th Cav, killed 68 enemy during action in Operation Burlington Trail. Friendly casualties were five wounded. Contact was first made after daybreak nine miles NW of Tam Ky and continued into the night. Ground troops were credited with 41 enemy killed, while gunship crews from the 8th Cav unit reported another 20 enemy killed. Airstrikes called in to support the cavalrymen resulted in seven enemy killed and 15 bunkers destroyed. The soldiers also captured a variety of weapons. A long range patrol made contact with an enemy force 25 miles of Duc Pho and killed three of the enemy while waiting for a helicopter to extract them from the area. Soldiers operating near Duc Pho killed two enemy and found the body of one VC killed in previous action.
