172 ABN BDE was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Binh Dinh Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Soui Cau Mountains
Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 17 Aug 1968 issue. A squad of riflemen from the 173rd Abn Bde uncovered $150,000 in U.S. currency and 935,000 Vietnamese piasters. The cache was found, almost by accident, by SGT Donald Morrison, whose squad from B/1/50?th Inf was conducting a routine search through a series of caves in the Soui Cau Mountains 35 miles NW of Qui Nhon. SP4 James Snow was the first to spot the cave. "It was partially hidden by brush," said Snow, "but wasn't really hard to see. Six others and I were the first to go in. There was a long, narrow passageway we had to crawl through and it opened into a large room which was partially lit." The money was found in sandbags and ammunition cans. The U.S. currency found was 3,000 $50 bills.
