Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 137 September 3 CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Action in the Americal Division's southern I Corps Tactical Zone remained scattered yesterday as Division forces accounted for 18 VC killed, five NVA killed, and three individual weapons captured. Yesterday in the 198th Inf. Bde's area of operations "Charger" units killed 12 VC and captured 1100 pounds of rice. "F" Troop, 17th Cav. in three separate contacts killed a total of three VC with small arms fire six miles south of Hoi An. Reconnaissance elements of the 4th Bn., 21st Inf. in three separate contacts killed a total of three VC five miles south of Hoi An. In an area centered seven miles south of Hoi An, "Gimlets" of the 4th Bn., 21st Inf. killed a total of two VC with small arms fire in two separate contacts yesterday. Another company of the 4th Bn., 21st Inf found a total of two VC that had recently been killed by artillery seven miles south of Hoi An. A company of the 3d Bn., 21st Inf. engaged a group of evading VC 20 miles northwest of Tam Ky with small arms fire killing one VC. Later the unit killed one additional VC in the same area. A company of the 4th Bn., 31st Inf. found 1100 pounds of rice in a hut 27 miles west of Tam Ky. Action was scattered in the 198th Inf. Bde. yesterday as "Brave and Bold" soldiers killed four VC, five NVA, captured three individual weapons, and detained four suspects. A "Professionals" unit of the 5th Bn., 46th Inf. led by CPT. Lawrence G. Johnson (Westchester, IL) killed two VC and detained one suspect when the unit engaged a group of VC while patrolling in the Burlington Trail area northwest of Chu Lai. "Aero Scouts" of the 123rd AVN. Bn. killed one VC and detained three suspects while flying in support of 1st Bn., 52nd Inf. soldiers south of Chu Lai. "Regulars" from a 1st Bn., 6th Inf. company found the fresh grave of one NVA yesterday afternoon while patrolling southwest of Chu Lai. Later another company of the battalion found two M-16 rifles in the same area. A unit of the 4th Bn., 3rd Inf. found the body of one VC late yesterday afternoon north of Chu Lai. The unit later found the bodies of four NVA in freshly dug graves in the same area. Action remained light and scattered in the 1st Sqdn., 1st Cav's area of operations yesterday as "F" Troop, 8th Cav. killed one VC and "B" Troop, 1st Sqdn, 1st Cav. killed one VC "C" Troop 1st Sqdn., 1st Cav. detained four VC suspects yesterday. In the 11th Inf. Bde's area of operations "Jungle Warriors" reported four VC suspects detained yesterday No significant contacts were reported. Division forces suffered five soldiers wounded and evacuated for treatment.
