Description: The 155th Aviation Company unit history states that one of their aircraft had an engine failure while returning for Ban Me Thuot from a section mission and forced to autorotate to a grassy field. There were no injuries to crew members or passengers. The most serious tragedy was yet to come. At 1100H, on a return flight from Duc Lap the 23d ARVN Division Senior Advisor's aircraft was forced to autorotate into dense jungle two miles north of Duc Lap. The aircraft exploded on impact with only two seriously injured crew members surviving the crash. General An, the 23d ARVN Div Commander, and COL Sage, the Senior Advisor, were listed among the dead. This tragedy was felt by everyone in the Ban Me Thuot area.
