Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 14 Sep 1968 issue.
Soldiers of the 1st Bde, 5th Mech killed 78 enemy soldiers in action near the DMZ. Riflemen of the 1/11th Inf were conducting a company-size patrol early in the afternoon when they came under artillery and mortar fire. As they swept the area, they engaged an NVA force occupying fortified positions. The infantrymen called in artillery and airstrikes, then assaulted the positions. The enemy withdrew, leaving behind 65 bodies. Two U.S. soldiers were KIA and 24 wounded. In two separate contacts around Con Thien, brigade units killed 13 NVA soldiers and captured three rifles and one light machinegun. Friendly casualties in the encounters were one killed and three wounded.
