Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 14 Sep 1968 issue.
During the week soldiers of the 9th Inf Div killed 77 enemy soldiers in several actions. Soldiers of the 2/39th Inf conducting a reconnaissance-in-force operation east of Rach Kien, received intense small arms and automatic weapons fire. The infantrymen supported by helicopter gunships, called in airstrikes and artillery on the entrenched enemy force. A sweep of the area yielded seven enemy bodies. As the riflemen continued their sweep, they again came under fire. Once again artillery fire and airstrikes were called in and ten more enemy soldiers were killed. Ten rifles were also captured. While flying support for ground troops of the 1st Brigade, helicopter gunship crews from the 3/17th Air Cav killed seven VC eight miles east of Tan An. A short time later soldiers of the 2/60th Inf killed five VC and captured two rifles in the same area.
