Battle for Thien Ngon SF Camp information
for A-323 SF DET

For date 680927

A-323 SF DET was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Tay Ninh Province, III Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Thien Ngon SF Camp
Description: Two battalions from the 9th VC Division tried to overrun the Thien Ngon SF CIDG Camp garrisoned by A-323 Detachment with excellant LLDB leadership. The camp's positions had recently been hardened to withstand all medium-caliber shelling. On the night of the 27th, the camp began receiving sporadic rocket and mortar fire which increased until 2000H. Between midnight and dawn, three mass assaults were hurled against the camp's ramparts. Each was heralded by brief but intensive mortar and rocket barrages and spearheaded by sapper squads that tried to blow lanes through the barrier wire with bangalore torpodoes. The presence of abundant armed airpower mauled the VC attackers and prevented them from reaching the camp's defensive lines. Casualties were KIA: 5 CIDG; WIA: 4 SF, 8 CIDG; VC losses were 140 dead and 3 captured.
