Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 28 Sep 1968 issue. In moderate action soldiers of the 9th Inf Div killed 127 enemy during the week. Infantrymen and helicopter crews from the 3/17th Air Cav reported killing 47 enemy soldiers. The action started when helicopter gunships engaged an estimated 10 enemy three miles NW of Can Duc. Two companies of the 2/39th Inf were inserted into the area and began to close on the enemy from the north and south of the Ben Ra River. As the infantrymen approached the enemy's position in a palm grove, the VC ran. "The VC seemed to want to avoid contact with the infantrymen at all costs," said CPT Billy J. Miller the LO from the air cav squadron. Early in the afternoon, two more companies from the 2/39th Inf and one from the 2/60th Inf moved into an area near the Vam Co Dong River to trap the enemy. Other elements were inserted to strengthen the cordon.
