Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 168 Friday October 4. CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Ten VC killed and three individual weapons captured, was the result of scattered contacts in the Americal Division's southern I Corps Tactical Zone yesterday. "Jungle Warriors" of the 11th Inf. Bde. reported nine VC killed and one VC suspect detained yesterday. "Shark" gunships of the 174th Avn Co. destroyed six structures and killed five VC in response to sniper fire, 15 miles north of Duc Pho. The "Sharks" also combined with troops of the 4th Bn., 3d Inf. to kill one VC on a hillside, two miles east of Duc Pho. Troops of a 3d Bn., 1st Inf. company killed one VC without an ID card near a village four miles north of Duc Pho. "E" Trp., 1st Cav. combined with infantrymen of the 1st Bn., 20th Inf. to kill one VC near huts nine miles northwest of Quang Ngai City. The helicopter of the Bde's S-2 Air, accounted for one VC killed near the Tra Khuc River, 14 miles west of Quang Ngai City. Yesterday afternoon soldiers of a 4th Bn., 3d Inf. company detained a VC tax collector near a clearing, six miles south of Duc Pho. In the 198th Inf. Bde's. area of operations, "Charger" units found one dead VC and three individual weapons yesterday. Troops of a 4th Bn., 21st Inf. company found the VC body seven miles southwest of Hoi An. He had been killed by small arms fire. Another 4th Bn., 21st Inf. company found a tunnel complex in the same area. The complex was large enough to hold a company size unit. Inside were one M-1 carbine, one K-44 rifle, and one SKS rifle. Action was light, in the 198th Inf. Bde's. area of operations yesterday. A 5th Bn., 46th Inf. company led by CPT George L. Harmon (Dothan, AL) working with a combined action patrol discovered two mine fields south of Chu Lai yesterday. The "Professionals" had unexpectedly come upon the mine field during a sweep of the area. They coordinated their efforts with a company from the 26th Engrs., who supplied a mine detector, and the Division EOD team and systematically destroyed the mines. A short time later they discovered and destroyed a second mine field. In all, the teams destroyed 93 mines and one booby trapped 105mm howitzer round. In the Burlington Trail area a 1st Bn., 52d Inf. company led by 1LT Michael J. Deal (Arlington, VA) discovered one protective mask, 20 82mm charges, and one bag of fuses while searching an abandoned hut west of Tam Ky. Further to the west a 1st Bn. 46th Inf. company led by CPT Roger Dimsdale (Washington, DC) found the charred remains of enemy equipment that had been burned as a result of air strikes. Seven air strikes directed by forward air controllers of the 198th Inf. Bde. destroyed 10 enemy bunkers and ignited one secondary fire west of Tam Ky. Civic action soldiers of the Bde. treated 669 Vietnamese during six MEDCAPs. 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav. "Dragoons" reported no contacts in their area of operations yesterday. Two Americal Division soldiers were reported killed and 19 wounded and evacuated for medical treatment as a result of yesterday's action.
