Location, Tam Ky
Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 12 Oct 1968 issue. Soldiers of the Americal reported killing 470 enemy soldiers in heavy fighting during the week. Fighting was heavy for the 1/1st Cav and supporting elements in the rocky hills seven miles SW of Tam Ky as they killed 208 NVA soldiers in one day. In the contact which began shortly before noon troopers from A Troop were credited with 109 of the enemy dead. Their sister unit Troop B accounted 11 more NVA killed. Two Div units operation with the cavalry unit, the 1/52nd Inf and the 4/21st Inf, killed a total of 42 enemy. Another 15 NVA soldiers were reported killed as gunship crews of F/8th Air Cav. flew six missions over the contact area. Eight airstrikes were also employed resulting in 25 NVA soldiers killed. Soldiers of the 198th LIB along with aeroscouts of B/123rd Avn Bn accounted for 76 NVA soldiers killed, one crewserved and four individual weapons captured and three suspects detained. The same days as the 198th's action soldiers of the 11th LIB killed 14 VC and detained 80 suspects. In another days action the 1/1st Cav. again aided by F/8th Cav. and a rifle company of the 4/21st Inf killed 92 NVA in contacts in the Operation Burlington Trail area.
