Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 12 Oct 1968 issue. For six consecutive days Skytroopers of the 1st Cav Div found rice caches. The total for that period was 53,170 pounds of rice - enough to feed a 500-man enemy battalion for nearly two months. The first find of 6,000 pounds was made by the 2/8th Cav. A Hoi Chanh led the unit to several enemy caches of rice five miles north of Quang Tri City in the Jeb Stuart III OA. In another find the same day, elements of the 3/5th Cav discovered 2,000 pounds of rice buried in the sand six miles north of Quang Tri City. The second day nearly 21,000 pounds of rice was uncovered. While conducting sweep-and-clear operations on the coastal plains 10 miles NE of Quang Tri City, an element of the 1/8th Cav found eight different caches of rice in a two-acre area. The rice stores totaled 10,800 pounds. Working in the same general area 2/8th Cav soldiers located a total of 63,000 pounds of rice buried in four caches. The next day the largest cache of the week was made as soldiers from the 2/7th Cav unearthed 40,000 pounds of rice buried in the sand seven miles north of Camp Evans. Soldiers of the 1/8th Cav located 8,000 additional pounds three miles NE of Quang Tri City. Again on the fourth day 2/8th Cav soldiers turned up more enemy rice caches. This time 8,000 pounds were found NE of Quang Tri City. 1/7th Cav soldiers found another 3,000 pounds. On the fifth and sixth day the rice uncovered totaled 7,300 pounds.
