Primary service involved, US Army
Darlac Province, II Corps, South Vietnam

Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 12 Oct 1968 issue. In night action the 4th Inf Div reported killing 45 enemy soldiers. While operating just south of Duc Lap, elements of the 2/35th Inf came under heavy mortar and rocket fire followed by numerous ground assaults. The enemy force was repulsed after an hour of steady contact, resulting in 35 NVA soldiers killed. A post-contact sweep of the area revealed five crew-served and several individual weapons. A reconnaissance platoon, operating north of Dak Seing, located a company-size enemy basecamp. Nearby, five NVA soldiers were observed and airstrikes called on their position, resulting two secondary explosions. Later the team spotted an estimated 100 NVA soldiers accompanied by a water buffalo laden with mortar tubes. Helicopter gunship crews were called in as darkness fell.
