Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 12 Oct 1968 issue. In two attacks elements of the 23rd Arty Grp repelled attackers at outposts north of Tay Ninh. Total number of enemy killed by all fighting units involved was 217. The first attack was against a Special Forces and CIDG outpost, 35 miles north of Tay Ninh. After a forty-minute enemy bombardment with mortars and rockets, an estimated VC company attacked. The cannoneers of ?/6/15th Arty lowered their 105mm howitzers to fight off the attackers. They fired more than 500 high-explosive rounds in the action. A total of 135 enemy perished in the encounter. Two days later C/6/15th Arty fired in the defense of their position at Thien Ngon 22 miles NW of Tay Ninh. Shortly after midnight the camp came under a 400-round rocket and mortar attack, followed by a ground assault by an estimated battalion-size enemy force. As the enemy tried to breach the SE and SW perimeter, the howitzers were lowered for direct fire on the invaders. A & B/2/32nd Arty fired their 175mm guns in support of the defenders. A count revealed 82 enemy bodies the next morning.
