Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 188 Thursday October 24. CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Units of the Americal Division accounted for eight VC and two NVA killed and 19 suspects detained in the southern I Corps area yesterday. "Charger units of the 196th Inf. Bde. accounted for six VC and one NVA killed in Operation Wheeler/Wallowa. A 4th Bn., 21st Inf. company killed one VC eight miles southwest of Hoi An. The recon plt. of the 4th Bn., 21st Inf. engaged a VC seven miles south of Hoi An with small arms fire, resulting in one VC killed. The 2d Bn. 1st Inf. command and control helicopter killed three VC with M-60 machinegun fire 22 miles northwest of Tam Ky. 18 miles northwest of Hoi An the command and control helicopter killed another VC with M-60 fire. Later, they killed one NVA 16 miles southwest of Hoi An. Light action continued in Quang Ngai province as 11th Inf. Bde. soldiers reported two VC and one NVA killed and three suspects detained. In the morning the 3d Bn., 1st Inf. command and control helicopter killed two VC who were hiding in a canal seven miles north of Duc Pho. In a late report from Tuesday, "Aero Scouts" of the 123d Avn. Bn. killed one NVA in a green uniform 40 miles northwest of Duc Pho. In other action the 4th Bn., 3d Inf. command and control helicopter detained three VC suspects near a trail four miles south of Duc Pho. The 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav. reported 16 VC suspects detained in the Burlington Trail area 10 miles northwest of Tam Ky. "Dragoons" of B Trp., 1st Cav. accounted for 13 of the suspects detained. "Blue Ghosts" of "F" Trp., 8th Cav. accounted for the other three VC suspects detained. Units of the 198th Inf. Bde. reported capturing over two tons of rice. Action centered in the Burlington Trail area. A 1st Bn., 52 Inf. company led by CPT Jack W. Sorensen (Council Bluffs, IA) discovered 3,500 pounds of rice while searching an area west of Tam Ky. Later in the day the "Ready Rifles" discovered another 1,000 pounds of rice as they continued to search the area. The rice has been evacuated to the brigade civil affairs officer for redistribution. Early in the morning a 1st Bn., 46th Inf. company led by 1LT Larry Gragg (Metalina, WA) found and destroyed one 175mm artillery round and a "Bouncing Betty" mine northwest of Chu Lai. Civic action soldiers of the brigade treated 480 Vietnamese during four MEDCAPs. The division suffered one soldier wounded and evacuated for medical treatment.
