Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 189 Friday October 25. CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Thirty VC killed, 45 suspects detained, and 16 individual weapons captured by Americal Division units, were the results of increased action in the southern I Corps area yesterday. Units of the 196th Inf. Bde. killed 22 VC and captured 16 individual weapons in Operation Wheeler/Wallowa. Action increased in the Duc Pho area as 11th Inf. Bde. soldiers reported six VC killed and 27 suspects detained. Early yesterday morning, the 1st Bn., 20th Inf. command and control helicopter (C&C) killed one VC and detained nine male suspects four miles southeast of Duc Pho. Later the "Sykes Regulars" C&C detained six VC suspects near the same site. "Aero Scouts" of the 123d Avn. Bn. working with soldiers of the 1st Bn., 20th Inf. detained a total of seven VC suspects. The suspects were detained in five separate incidents in an area centered seven miles southeast of Duc Pho. The 4th Bn., 3d Inf. C&C killed two VC in separate actions near railroad tracks three miles northwest of Duc Pho. A few minutes later the "Old Guard" C&C element detained two VC suspects near the same site. Three VC were killed in separate actions by the 3d Bn., 1st Inf. C&C in an area centered five miles north of Duc Pho. In other action, infantrymen of a 1st Bn., 20th Inf. company detained three VC suspects near a stream 12 miles south of Duc Pho. Units of the 198th Inf. Bde. killed two VC, detained five VC suspects, and captured 21,500 pounds of rice. A 5th Bn., 46th Inf. company, led by CPT Michael R. Smith (New Lebanon, OH) engaged and killed one VC south of Chu Lai in the morning. Later in the day the "Professionals" uncovered an eight ton rice cache in the area. "Aero Scouts" of the 123d Avn. Bn. killed one VC and detained three VC suspects during separate incidents south of Chu Lai in the afternoon. A 5th Bn., 46th Inf. company led by CPT George L. Harmon (Dothan, AL) detained two VC suspects while sweeping an area southwest of Chu Lai. In the Burlington Trail area, a 1st Bn., 46th Inf. company led by 1LT William Howarth (Haddenfield, NJ) discovered 1,200 pounds of rice while searching an area west of Tam Ky in the morning. A 1st Bn., 52d Inf. company led by 1LT Steven G. Olsen (Minneapolis, MN) discovered 1,500 pounds of rice in a valley west of Tam Ky. While searching in the same area, elements of the 1st Bn. company led by CPT Jack W. Sorensen (Council Bluffs, IA) captured 2,800 pounds of rice. All the rice captured by the 198th Inf. Bde. will be evacuated and distributed to refugees. Civic action soldiers of the brigade treated 448 Vietnamese during four MEDCAPs. The 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav. reported 13 VC suspects detained by B Trp. in their area of operations. Eleven Americal soldiers were wounded and evacuated for medical treatment.
