Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 192 Monday October 28. CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Units of the Americal Division accounted for 31 VC and 20 NVA killed, eight suspects detained, and one crew-served and seven individual weapons captured in southern I Corps yesterday. The 11th Inf. Bde accounted for 19 NVA and ten VC killed, one suspect detained, and three individual weapons captured. Troops of a 4th Bn., 3d Inf. company found 11 NVA and one VC killed by air strikes in an area centered 12 miles northwest of Duc Pho. One K-44 rifle was also found in the area. Continuing the sweep, soldiers of another 4th Bn., 3d Inf. company found three NVA and two VC. One of the VC was found in a grave. "Aero Scouts" of the 123d Avn. Bn., working with the 4th Bn., 3d Inf., found three NVA and one VC which had been killed by air strikes. Troops of the 3d Bn., 1st Inf. company found two dead VC and captured one M-16 rifle in the area. Soldiers of the 4th Bn., 3d Inf. recon. plt. found one VC killed by air strikes 11 miles northwest of Duc Pho. Early that morning, the 3d Bn., 1st Inf. command and control helicopter killed one VC fleeing from a village 16 miles northwest of Duc Pho. "Aero Scouts" of the 123d Avn. Bn., working with the 3d Bn., 1st Inf. killed two NVA and one VC in two separate actions near the Song Ve 17 miles northwest of Duc Pho. One .45 cal. pistol was also captured in that action. In other action, infantrymen of a 1st Bn., 20th Inf. company killed one VC near Highway 1, two miles north of Duc Pho. "Dragoons" of E Trp., 1st Cav. detained one VC suspect on Bridge 95, ten miles south of Duc Pho. "Charger" units of the 196th Inf. Bde. killed 17 VC and one NVA, captured one crew-served and four individual weapons, found 2,800 pounds of rice, and detained two suspects. The 2d Bn., 1st Inf. command and control helicopter killed a total of two VC in two separate incidents 18 miles southwest of Hoi An. F Trp., 17th Cav. killed a total of four VC in three separate actions in an area centered 15 miles northwest of Tam Ky. In the same area F Trp., 17th Cav. found a tunnel with one dead VC in it. A further search of the cave revealed to female VC suspects hiding in the complex. A 4th Bn., 21st Inf. company killed five VC in a cave eight miles southeast of Hoi An. Two 25-pound blocks of explosives were found in the cave. The company later engaged a group of VC seven miles southwest of Hoi An, killing one. Another 4th Bn., 21st Inf. company killed one VC southwest of Tien Phuc. A 3d Bn., 21st Inf. company engaged a group of VC fleeing a hut nine miles west of Tam Ky, killing three. The company later killed one NVA in the same area. F Trp., 17th Cav. found one SKS rifle buried in the ground 16 miles northwest of Tam Ky. Later a detainee led them to a second SKS near a stream in the same area. A further search of the area revealed one M-60 machine-gun hidden in a stream. A 2d Bn., 1st Inf. company found 50 bags of rice totaling 1,600 pounds 20 miles southwest of Hoi An. A 4th Bn., 31st Inf. company found 1,200 pounds of rice in a bin next to a hut 20 miles west of Tam Ky. Vietnamese civilians turned in to the 2nd Bn., 1st Inf., under the Voluntary Informant Program, 17 105MM howitzer rounds, five 81mm mortar rounds, 16 M-79 rounds, and two M-72 LAWS. Units of the 198th Inf. Bde. killed four VC, detained three suspects, and captured over five tons of rice yesterday. A 1st Bn., 52nd Inf. company, led by CPT Jack W. Sorensen (Council Bluffs, IA), captured 9,500 pounds of rice while searching an area west of Tam Ky. Also found with the large rice cache was 15 strips of meat and two bushels of corn. Later in the day the "Ready Rifles" company killed to VC in the same area. F Trp., 8th Cav. found the body of one VC killed during fighting northwest of Chu Lai. Another 1st Bn., 52d Inf. company led by CPT Floyd W. Mclean Jr., (Ft. Sill, OK), found and additional 600 pounds of rice west of Tam Ky. In the Chu Lai area a 5th Bn., 46th Inf. company, led by CPT George L. Harmon (Dothan, AL), found and destroyed one booby-trapped 81mm mortar round south of Chu Lai. The 5th Bn., 46th Inf. recon. plt., led by 1LT Donald T. Penny, detained three VC suspects south of Chu Lai. CPT Harmon's company killed one VC while sweeping an area south of Chu Lai. CPT Sorensen's company found a mess hall, which was the probable destination for the rice they captured in the afternoon. The "Ready Rifles" found the six table mess hall near the same site of the large rice find. Among items found in the mess hall were four cooking pots, 30 bowls, one half barrel of corn and beef, and 100 pounds of rice. Civic action soldiers of the brigade treated 463 Vietnamese during five MEDCAPs. The 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav. reported two VC suspects detained in the Burlington Trail area by "Blue Ghosts" of F Trp., 8th Cav. yesterday. Two Division soldiers were killed and nine were wounded and evacuated for medical treatment.
