Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "US infantrymen crush 2 NVA units 5th Div rips bn in DMZ" dated 11 Nov 1968. In a fierce firefight in the southern portion of the DMZ, troops and tank crews from the 1st Bde, 5th Inf Div (Mech) and supporting elements, ripped into an estimated NVA battalion, killing 232 NVA soldiers. The action began when A/1/61st Inf swept through the southern portion of the DMZ. About five miles north of Con Thien, the mechanized troopers located and engaged the heavily entrenched enemy battalion. The enemy troops began throwing heavy mortar and small arms fire. The infantrymen called for tactical air support, gunships and naval gunfire, which responded by blasting the enemy bunkers. Overhead a forward air control spotter directed artillery onto the enemy.
