for B/7/17 CAV
CALLSIGN - BLUE

For date 681208

B/7/17 CAV was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
South Vietnam
Description: B/7/17 Cav's Aero Rifle Platoon captured some blue colored enemy cloth during a heavy fire fight with an estimated VC Company. This was perfect since their call sign had always been BLUE. The cloth was turned over to a local tailor who fashioned scarves for the platoon members. They were the first B Troop platoon to adopt a scarf. These scarves have a crossed rifle design with "B Troop, 7th Sqdn, 17th Air Cav" embroidered in white plus the individual's name or nickname inscribed in white. This all occurred under the leadership of ARP leader 1LT John R. Haberlein. Not long after this the Scouts started wearing bright red, the Guns black, and the Lift yellow scarves. MAJ James A. McCracken, the Troop CO, wore a scarf made up of all four colors.
