Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 13 Jan 1969 issue. 1st Infantry Division soldiers reported killing 28 enemy in light action during the week. Five enemy were killed in scattered contacts around Lai Khe on Dec 23. Elements from the 1/28th Inf were on a reconnaissance mission six miles northeast of Lai Khe when they encountered an enemy force as they were moving into a woodline. The enemy detonated Claymore mines and opened up with small arms fire. Artillery and gunships supported the U.S. infantrymen during the hour-long battle. A search revealed three enemy bodies. Two enemy were killed when soldiers from the 1/16th Inf found several NVA soldiers trying to hide in a hut four miles southwest of Lai Khe.
