Primary service involved, US Army

Location, Quang Tri
Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Gunner honored" dated 27 Jan 1969. SP4 George T. Milton, Jr., was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross recently for his valorous actions as a door gunner with the 1st Bde, 5th Inf Div. The award stemmed from Milton's actions when an emergency call came in for a medevac. Milton, then a door gunner, volunteered to go into an insecure landing zone which was under heavy fire to help medevac seriously wounded personnel. Minutes after they returned the wounded personnel to the hospital another emergency call went out for a medevac mission. Again Milton volunteered to go. This time high winds and heavy rain made it necessary to fly in at a low speed and altitude. While enroute to the medical facility Milton exposed himself to the imminent danger of falling from the aircraft by not securing his safety strap, which would have prevented him from giving first aid to the wounded, and directing suppressive fire against the enemy.
