2/20 ARA was a US Army unit
1 BDE 1 CAV was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Tay Ninh Province, III Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Tay Ninh
Description: The battalion history states that the greatest amount of activity for the month of January took place in the Tay Ninh area. All three batteries committed sections to this area throughout the month in support of the 1st Brigade and the 7th ARVN Airborne Division. The most significant day was the 29th. The BLUE MAX sections flew a total of 35 hours and fired 1,107 rockets in support of ZEBRA TANGO, 2/7th Cav, north of Tay Ninh. The battalion was credited with 142 enemy killed, 17 bunkers destroyed, 15 structured destroyed, and 12 automatic weapons silenced for the month. January showed a significant increase in ground-to-air fire reported in the 1st Cav Div AO. To combat the increase of .51 caliber AA positions, a new AFA concept was developed. It consisted of massing sections of AFA on known weapons positions. A vast amount of ordnance could be placed on a concentrated area. Formulated using the time on target (TOT) principle, these fires proved to be highly effective. There were no reports of AA fire from an area following attack using this newly developed technique. One weapon which proved particularly effective for use in conducting TOT missions was the flechette rocket.
