Attack on Dak Pek information
for A-242 SF DET

For date 700414

A-242 SF DET was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Kontum Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Dak Pek
Description: SFC Wade's narrative continues: The final and successful assault on 203 hill was lead by all of the Americans from the Mike Force unit plus about half of A-242, about ten in all. Even the well-trained Mike Force troops and the camp's Strikers were not that excited about trench warfare, being jungle combat troops; so when the Americans yelled 'Follow Me,' none did. The Americans hesitated for a second, looked at each-other, yelled at the Mike Force troop, then started up the hill alone. Witnessing this feat of bravery was too much for the Yards who yelled, leaped from cover and joined their leaders. The enemy fire was withering and the Yards took casualties especially when they had to bunch up to get through the saddle area. After a short exchange of hand grenades, the assault force took the first set of bunkers and trench line. They divided into two groups and moved around the hill positions. Only one American was seriously wounded and the critical hill was retaken. By noon they had successfully recaptured the rest of the camp which continued to take large amounts of enemy fire from enemy soldiers dug in on several lower hills located a hundred meters to the west.
