Attack on Dak Pek information
for A-242 SF DET

For date 700415

A-242 SF DET was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Kontum Province, II Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Dak Pek
Description: SFC Wade's narrative continues: During the night, the NVA counterattacked to retake the 203 hill in basically a replay of their attack of the 12th. They were extremely aggressive and did penetrate the wire again even with the USAF Spectre gunship overhead. Several sappers made it up the hill but the entire attack was generally a suicide effort against the well-disciplined Mike Force troops. The bombardment and attacks continued most of the day as it was evident that the NVA had been recently resupplied. By the end of the day even the Mike Force troops were tired and needed a break. The NVA made another serious attack during the night but the defenses held. After about an hour, the firing dwindled away to the normal rate. This proved to be the last major NVA assault of the battle.
