Operation BINH TAY I
South Vietnam
Description: BINH TAY (Tame the West) carried the 4th Inf Div, reinforced with the 40th ARVN Regt and the 3/506th Inf Bn, into Cambodian. After six B-52 runs, several infantry units met fierce receptions on their initial LZs. The 3/8th Inf Bn ran into trouble after it had only 60 on the ground. One helicopter was shot down and two more damaged before the landing could be completed. In the face of more hot LZs, the 4th either landed at alternative sites or postponed insertions. Once on the ground there was only one significant firefight and the soldiers searched out numerous caches. After ten days the Americans left the Vietnamese to continue the operation on their own.
