Description: 01Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 08-14 Page 2 Dewey Canyon II Sweeps MR1 Units all over Military Region 1 continued their Operation Dewey Canyon II in an effort to sweep the enemy from the northern provinces of the Republic of Vietnam. Men of the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division, spearheaded the drive in MR 1, in support of their Republic of Vietnam armed forces comrades driving into Laos to pinch off the Ho Chi Minh supply trails. 5th Inf Div Late the morning of Feb. 8, an element of the 1st Bde., 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized), engaged an undetermined-size enemy force eight miles west of Khe Sanh. Small arms and automatic weapons fire was exchanged and U.S. artillery and tactical air strikes supported in the engagement. Enemy losses are unknown. One U.S. soldier was killed and six were wounded in the action. Also in Military Region 1 the same day, an element of the 1st Bde., while in a defensive position 10 miles northeast of Khe Sanh, received less than 15 rounds of 82mm mortar fire. U.S. casualties were light with no fatalities and no materiel damage. Another element of the 1st Bde., taking part in Operation Dewey Canyon II on Feb. 8, engaged an undetermined-size enemy force 12 miles northwest of Khe Sanh. Organic weapons fire was exchanged. Enemy casualties are unknown. U.S. casualties were one killed and sixteen wounded. At noon Feb. 9 in Quang Tri Province, an element of the 1st Bde. Received small arms fire from an unknown-size enemy force 11 miles northeast of Khe Sanh. Enemy casualties are unknown. One U.S. solder was killed and one was wounded. On the evening of Feb. 11, an element of the 1st Bde. received less than 10 rounds of 122mm rocket fire eight miles northwest of Khe Sanh. There were no casualties and materiel damage in the attack was light. On the night of Feb. 14, also in Quang Tri Province, an element of the 1st Bde. observed five enemy in an area 10 miles north-northwest of Khe Sanh and engaged them with organic weapons. The action resulted in all five enemy being killed and four individual weapons and a radio captured. There were no friendly casualties. About 40 minutes later in the same general area, a second element of the 1st Bde. engaged seven enemy with organic weapons. his action resulted in three enemy killed. Friendly casualties were two wounded.
