Description: 01Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 08-14 Page 2 Military Region 1 In Operation Dewey Canyon II early Feb. 8, a U.S. truck convoy moving west on Route 9 to Khe Sanh was ambushed by an undetermined-size force 14 miles northeast of Khe Sanh. The enemy employed small arms, automatic weapons and rocket grenade fire. Convoy security elements returned fire with organic weapons. Enemy casualties were unknown. One U.S. soldier was killed and nine were wounded. The convoy suffered moderate damage. A U.S. Army AH1 helicopter was hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and was destroyed in Quang Tri Province, two miles northeast of Khe Sanh on Feb. 11. The two crewmen were killed in the crash. The next day, a U.S. Army UH1 helicopter and an OH6 helicopter were hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and were destroyed 11 miles northeast of Khe Sanh. Two U.S. crewmen were killed and one was wounded in the crashes. Still another U.S. Army AH1 helicopter was hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and was destroyed 12 miles northwest of Khe Sanh on Feb. 12. The two U.S. crewmen were killed in the crash.
