Description: 15Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 22-27 Page 2 1st Cav Div In the early morning hours of Feb. 22 in Tay Ninh Province of Military Region 3, an element of the 2nd Bde., 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), was engaged by an estimated four enemy companies 13 miles south of Tay Ninh City. The attack, preceded by 25 rounds of unidentified mortar fire, succeeded in penetrating tactical defensive wire and a POL dump was blown up. Enemy casualties were three killed. U.S. casualties were two killed and nine wounded. An undetermined amount of POL was destroyed. In air operations in support of the ARVN in Operation Toan Thang 01/71 in Cambodia, helicopter gunships of the 1st Cav. engaged an undetermined-size enemy force 16 miles east of Kampong Cham City in Kampong Cham Province during the afternoon of Feb. 26. The gunships killed 25 enemy. There were no friendly casualties.
