Description: 15Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 22-27 Page 2 1st Avn Bde In Kontum Province of Military Region 2, helicopter gunships of the 1st Aviation Brigade, assigned to I Field Force, Vietnam, spotted 15 enemy in a hut and bunker complex 33 miles northwest of Kontum City on the afternoon of Feb. 22. The gunships engaged the enemy and called in F100s of the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing to support the action. Twelve enemy were killed; three bunkers and five huts were destroyed. There were no friendly casualties. Two days later, during the afternoon of Feb. 24, also in Kontum Province, helicopter gunships of the 1st, also assigned to IFFV, engaged 20 enemy in an open area 31 miles west-southwest of Kontum City. U.S. F4 fighter-bombers from the 12th Tactical Fighter Wing supported the action, which resulted in five of the enemy killed, five huts and three bunkers destroyed. There were no friendly casualties. An hour and a half later, gunships of the same aviation element took fire from a bunker and hut complex 30 miles west-southwest of Kontum City. Again, F4s supported the engagement, which resulted in eight enemy killed, six huts and one bunker destroyed. There were no friendly casualties. Also in Kontum Province at noon Feb. 27, helicopter gunships of the 1st, also assigned to IFFV, engaged six enemy in a hut and bunker complex 34 miles west-northwest of Kontum City. The action resulted in five enemy killed with no friendly casualties.
