Description: 22Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 28- Mar. 6 5th Inf Div In Military Region 1 on the evening of Feb. 28, an element of the 1st Bde., 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized), while in a night defensive position seven miles north of Khe Sanh in Quang Tri Province, received fewer than 25 rounds of 82mm mortar fire, resulting in light casualties with no fatalities and no materiel damage. Two and one-half miles south-southwest of Khe Sanh, during the afternoon of March 4, an element of the 1st Bde. was engaged by an unknown-size enemy force. Results of the action were seven U.S. wounded and two vehicles damaged. Enemy casualties are unknown. That evening, an element of the 1st Bde., while in a night defensive position 13 miles northwest of Khe Sanh, received fewer than 20 rounds of 82mm mortar fire, resulting in light casualties with no fatalities and light materiel damage. Also in Quang Tri Province during the morning of March 5, an element of the 1st Bde. was engaged by an undetermined-size enemy force four miles east of Khe Sanh. The enemy employed rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire in the 15-minute contact. U.S. artillery supported the engagement. One U.S. soldier was killed, 13 wounded and two vehicles were damaged. Enemy casualties are unknown. That evening, an element of the 1st Bde. engaged 15 enemy in an area six miles southwest of Khe Sanh. Eight of the enemy were killed, three individual and two crew-served weapons were captured. There were no friendly casualties.
