Description: 22Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 28- Mar. 6 Laos A U.S. Army UH1 helicopter was hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and was destroyed in the lower panhandle of Laos during the afternoon of Feb. 28. One crew member was wounded and the crew was extracted. During the afternoon of March 3, 10 U.S. Army UH1 helicopters were hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and were destroyed in the lower panhandle while supporting RVNAF operation Lam Son 719. U.S. casualties were one killed, 11 wounded and 10 missing. The following evening, two U.S. Army UH1 helicopters were hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and were destroyed in the lower panhandle. No U.S. personnel were injured. During the afternoon of March 5, four U.S. Army UH1 and one U.S. Army AH1 helicopters were hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and were destroyed in the lower panhandle while supporting RVNAF operation Lam Son 719. There were no casualties. During the evening, a U.S. Army UH1 helicopter was hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and was destroyed in the lower panhandle while supporting the RVNAF operation. Two U.S. crew members were wounded. Also in Quang Tri Province, a U.S. Army truck convoy was attacked by an unknown-size enemy force three miles east of Khe Sanh on the afternoon of March 6. The attack consisted of small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire and resulted in one U.S. soldier killed, two wounded and two vehicles damaged. Enemy casualties are unknown.
