Description: 29Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Mar. 7-13 Military Region 1 In Quang Tri Province early March 7, an unknown-size enemy sapper element infiltrated a forward supply base eight miles southwest of Cam Lo. Demolition charges of an unknown type were used to destroy bladders containing 40,000 gallons of aviation fuel. Several thousand rounds of 20mm ammunition were also destroyed. There were no friendly casualties. Later in the day, the Quang Tri combat base received fewer than five rounds of 122mm rocket fire. There were no casualties and no materiel damage. During the morning of March 9 in the same province, a U.S. truck convoy traveling on Highway QL9, seven miles west of Cam Lo, received an unknown number of rocket-propelled grenade rounds. U.S. casualties were one killed and 21 wounded. One truck was destroyed and another damaged. Enemy casualties are unknown. Search efforts in Quang Tri Province for a missing U.S. Army U21 aircraft and five U.S. personnel that were aboard were terminated March 10. The aircraft had been reported missing since March 4 and was last reported about five miles west of Dong Ha. The five U.S. personnel have been reported missing. On March 10, a U.S. Army UH1 helicopter was hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and was destroyed in Quang Tri Province, nine miles west of Khe Sanh. The crew was extracted. The next afternoon, another U.S. Army UH1 helicopter was hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and was destroyed in the province, 13 miles northwest of Khe Sanh. One U.S. crew member was killed and three were wounded. No casualties were reported when a U.S. Army OH6 aircraft received enemy ground fire, crashed and was destroyed 10 miles south of Quang Ngai City during the afternoon of March 13. (Note: Americal ORLL has an OH-6A forced down from .51 cal, but later recovered, also an UH-1C was forced down and later recovered in the same general area. No units mentioned).
