Primary service involved, US Army

Location, Khe Sanh
Description: 22Mar71 If at first you don't succeed KHE SANH - To one Screaming Eagle from Hq. Co., 326th Engineer Bn., 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), his third tour in South Vietnam follows a similar pattern to his previous two years spent flying medical evacuation missions. "We were shot down on my first mission," remarked Spec. 5 Donald Amos, recalling his first medevac in Vietnam in 1967. "All told we went down 11 times, four due to mechanical problems," the engineers' senior aid man explained. "In one incident, the chopper received 139 hits, but no one was injured. "One of my more memorable experiences was being called to land on the roof of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon during the Tet offensive in 1968," the Screaming Eagle reminisced. "We also had the distinction of flying Martha Raye as a passenger during one of her tours of Vietnam," he said. "When flying dustoff missions, you learn to be quick and efficient. The lives of your patients depend on how fast they get the proper medical treatment. You must constantly be alert for any sign that the patient is going into shock, and treat him accordingly," Amos explained. "Besides the medical duties involved in dustoff operations, you are also a crew member and must have a working knowledge of the ship. You're both a medic and a crew chief," Amos added. The Screaming Eagle recently experienced another aspect of medical airmobility when his engineer unit took a part in Operation Dewey Canyon II and was airlifted to Khe Sanh to construct the new runway and repair roads. The senior aidman accompanied the battalion surgeon and two specially stocked medical conex containers to Khe Sanh. The medical aid center that was set up boasted the best-stocked pharmacy at the remote outpost in northwestern Military Region 1. 21Mar71 Photo Caption Page 3 IT'S A TOUCHDOWN for this UH1 helicopter from the 101st Avn.
