More detail on this person: Walter Allegar pased away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2025at the Edward C.Alworth Veterans Home, Lebanon, OR. He was born December 4, 1937, in Walla Walla, Washington to John LaVere Allegar and Myrtle Henderson Allegar. The middle of three siblings, he was pre-deceased by brother John LaVere "Jack" Allegar, Jr in August 2009. His surviving younger brother, Arthur Allen "Jim" Allegar resides in the Philippines During his young life he lived in Pendleton, Oregon, Longview and Kelso, Washington. He was a member of the Washington National Guard and graduated Kelso High School, June 2, 1955. Upon finishing high school, he joined the US Army, which led to career of 22 years with 2 tours of duty in Germany, multiple stateside Army posts and as a combat helicopter pilot in Viet Nam 1967-68. Upon return to the states from Vietnam he was posted to Ft. Hood, Texas and ultimately to his last station in the Panama Canal Zone with his family of the time. He retired out of the Army at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio Texas, 1976. After retirement from the US Army, he and the family moved to Walla Walla, Washington where he attended Walla Walla College and June 1st, 1980, received an Associate of Science degree in Electronic Technology He and the family relocated to Salem, Oregon in the mid 1980's. Unable to find suitable employment in the field of electronics he concentrated efforts on healing from PTSD, working with other veterans traumatized by the Vietnam war. He was instrumental in helping get a Veterans Center organized in Salem, Oregon. In 1990 along with several other like-minded veterans and his love of motorcycle riding he was a founding member of Oregon Veterans Motorcycle Association. There were 12 chapters statewide at one time and now High Desert Eagles, Bend area, and Wind Riders of Mill City and mid-Willamette Valley are remaining active OVMA chapters. Their purpose is to help Oregon Veterans in need and have the fellowship of riding motorcycles throughout the state for this purpose. The chapters have consistently given to the two Oregon Veterans Homes in The Dalles and Lebanon, given to veterans' families that needed assistance. Walter was an At Large member, being State Secretary for 17 years. He was a life member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans Association, Disabled American Veterans, Military Officers Association of America, Cascade chapter 101s Airborne Association, National Rifle Association He enjoyed rock climbing during his younger years after retirement from the Army, having climbed Smith Rock in Central Oregon, the Pestacian Pinnacles near Leavenworth Washington and other famous rock-climbing ventures throughout both states. He visited many of the Vietnam Traveling Walls that came thru SW Washington and Oregon, even volunteering to assist other visitors to locate names of lost loved ones and friends that were engraved on the black walls of the replicas of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. He rode to the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC during Rolling Thunder two times. He was a weekly member of a disabled Vietnam Veterans group of people healing from PTSD at the Salem Vet Center until he was diagnosed with the insidious disease of Alzheimer's in late 2017. He was an old soldier, collecting and researching about the military reading books about Vietnam, previous wars and a great historian. Walter will be sorely missed by Nelda Carroll-Allegar, his wife of almost 18 years of Dallas, Oregon and his brother, Art Allegar of the Philippines. Children, David Scott Allegar, Dale Leon Allegar, Janice Cathleen Guthrie of prior marriages. Stepchildren of 2" marriage that were raised in his household, Johnny Ray Garner, Sandra Jean Garner, Terry Lafayette Garner, Charles Bess Allegar, adopted son, deceased June 18, 1994. There are numerous grandchildren and Douglas Allegar, his nephew and his adult children in Iowa and Washington state A brief illness hospitalized him in Lebanon Hospital where he was discharged back to his home in Delta 3 with Evergreen Hospice. I wish to acknowledge the wonderful love, care and attention received by Cathy Sherard, RCM, Nancy Munson, Social Worker and nurse Kristina, CNA's KT, Red, Cat and others that cared for him daily.
