Achieving the top rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 US Army Retired, Helicopter Pilot, Master Aviator Wings, he served in Vietnam three times. He served as Commander of American Legion Post #301, Perryville, Kentucky until his death. He was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Texas Kentucky. He was born to the late Thomas Beldon Alsip and Nannie Louise Adkins Alsip on March 12, 1935, in Whitley County, Kentucky. He was predeceased by his only brother Kenton Delmar Alsip and a sister Maxine Alsip Slayton. Bernard spent ten years in the Springfield Kentucky National Guard, then he enlisted in the United States Army where he served for twenty years and retired in 1983. Bernard entered the military as a high school drop-out and went on to earn degrees from three Universities. He then attended Technical School and became a licensed electrician and plumber. Bernard loved shooting Trap & Skeet. He shot in the World Open in 1968. He had been to eighteen foreign countries with Germany and Australia being his favorite. For twenty-two years he was a Volunteer Instructor for the State of Kentucky teaching the Safe Use of Firearms. For twenty-five years he was employed by Alan Burns, CEO of Dan-arb, Incorporated where he did maintenance and repair on all of their equipment including Heating and Air. During those years he made many lasting friendships. He is survived by his beloved wife Ruth Engle Alsip (they celebrated their golden anniversary in May of last year). One daughter, Julie Ellen Alsip, and two granddaughters Kendall Ellen Alsip Patterson and Kaleb Alsip-Terry Eastwood. One great-granddaughter, Lily Ellen Eastwood. Two stepdaughters, Anita Tapp Barlow, and Sandra Lynne Smock. One stepson, Kenneth Eugene Smock, and seven step-grandchildren. A sister, Eula Alsip Derringer, five nieces, and one very special nephew William David Haynes, Jr. Our family is very grateful to Dr. Brian Ellis, McDowell Hospital Staff, Boyle County EMS, the AIR EVAC LIFETEAM, and the University of Kentucky Hospital Staff with a special thank you to Dr. Kara Kennedy-Fister, and the wonderful care provided by Hospice to our beloved as well as our family. All services will be at the American Legion Post #301 in Perryville, Kentucky. Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 10th from 4:00-8:00 PM. Thursday, May 11th, from 11:00 AM until Funeral Service at 1:00PM. Full Military Honors with interment to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Stith Funeral Home.
