More detail on this person: Lieutenant Colonel Walter D. Alexander, US Army Retired, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at his home in Gainesville Georgia. LTC Alexander was born on October, 16, 1934 in Spruce Pine, NC the son of the late William J. and Doris D. Alexander. He graduated from Franklin High School (NH) in 1953 and received a Bachelor of Science from Boston University in 1957. He entered the US Army after graduation. Overseas assignments included Korea, Germany, Vietnam and Panama. Among his personal military decorations are: Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Stars, Meritorious Service Medal, twenty three Air Medals, five Army Commendation Medals and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. After retiring from the military LTC Alexander lived and worked for 27 years in Summerville, SC where he was active in the SERTOMA Club, the Rotary Club and the Ashborough Civic Association. He moved to Gainesville, GA in 2006 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Walter is survived by his wife Barbara, son and daughter-in-law Mark and Michelle Alexander and their two children, Boone and Peter all of Gainesville, GA; a daughter Marlene Alexander of Atlanta, GA and a brother Charles T. Alexander of Burnsville, NC A funeral mass will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday March 8, 2008 at Saint Teresa Catholic Church, 1101 Dorchester Rd., Summerville, SC. Friends may call at the church from 10 o'clock until the hour of the mass. Private burial will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. In lieu of flowers any donations may be offered to St. Theresa's in memory of Walter.
